Big Sur Hiking Trails and Beaches

Discover scenic trails, hidden beaches, waterfalls, and coastal adventures near Treebones Resort.

A Hiking Guide

Explore Big Sur Beyond the Resort.

Treebones is well positioned for exploring the Big Sur coast. Here on the South Coast, things tend to feel a little quieter. Distances between destinations are greater, traffic is lighter, and many trails and beaches see fewer visitors. It's one of the reasons so many guests choose Treebones as a base for exploring this less traveled stretch of coastline. Within a short drive, you'll find beaches, waterfalls, redwood groves, wildlife viewing areas, and hiking trails ranging from easy walks to more challenging day hikes. Whether you're looking for a quiet beach, a scenic overlook, or a trail through the redwoods, there are plenty of opportunities to get out and explore during your stay. Below are some of our favorite spots both north and south of Treebones.

Helpful Information & FAQs

A few helpful tips before heading out. Trail conditions, weather, and access can change throughout the year, so we always recommend checking current conditions and stopping by the Front Desk if you'd like recommendations during your stay.

What is the closest beach to Treebones?

Willow Creek Beach is located less than a mile north of Treebones and offers easy access to both rocky shoreline and sandy beach areas. Sand Dollar Beach, approximately three miles north, is another popular option for beach walks, photography, and tide pooling.

What are the best beginner-friendly hikes nearby?

Pacific Valley Trail, Limekiln State Park, Salmon Creek Falls, and Redwood Gulch are all great options for guests looking for shorter hikes with rewarding scenery and relatively easy access.

Where can I see waterfalls?

Some of the area's most popular waterfalls can be found at Limekiln State Park, Salmon Creek Falls, Redwood Gulch, and along portions of the Soda Springs Trail. Water flow varies seasonally and is often strongest during the winter and spring months.

Do I need a trail map or cell service?

Cell service is limited or unavailable throughout much of Big Sur. While most of the trails featured on this page are well established, we recommend downloading maps and directions before leaving Treebones. Trail maps can also be found at BigSurTrailMap.net.

What should I bring for a hike?

Comfortable footwear, water, sun protection, and layers are recommended year round. Coastal weather can change quickly, and temperatures may vary significantly between the shoreline, redwood groves, and inland trails.

Can Treebones arrange guided hiking or kayaking tours?

Yes. Guests interested in guided outdoor experiences can book private hiking and kayaking adventures through Wildheart Coastal Adventures, offering trips in Big Sur, Montana de Oro, and Morro Bay.

Is there poison oak on local trails?

Yes. Poison oak is incredibly common throughout Big Sur and can be found along many trails, particularly in shaded areas, creek corridors, and overgrown sections of trail. We recommend staying on established paths, avoiding contact with unfamiliar plants, and wearing clothing that covers your arms and legs. If you think you've been exposed, wash exposed skin as soon as possible after your hike. Technu products are available for purchase in our gift shop.

How can I help protect Big Sur while visiting?

Please follow Leave No Trace principles by staying on designated trails, packing out everything you bring in, respecting wildlife, and helping preserve the natural beauty of the coast for future visitors.
